NASUWT comments on the Conservative Party’s plan for the expansion of free schools

Commenting on reports of an announcement by the Prime Minister on the Conservative Party’s plans for free schools after the General Election 2015 and on the Secretary of State Nicky Morgan’s comments on the Today programme, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“It is clear that if elected the Conservative Party will continue its obsessive ideological focus on structural change.

“It is scandalous that in the context where the Conservative Party is proposing even deeper cuts to funding post the General Election, it still plans to pour millions of pounds into free schools.

“There is no evidence that structural change raises educational standards.

“I note with interest that the Secretary of State Nicky Morgan, when commenting on the Conservative’s free school proposals, stated that post-election a Conservative Government would not allow schools to be run for profit.

“If the Conservatives are genuinely committed to not for profit education then they should, now, prior to the General Election, open up the books of the multi academy chains to public scrutiny, a facility so far denied to Ofsted and the Public Accounts Committee.”
