NASUWT supports calls to get global education goals back on track

The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, has backed the call from a powerful group of global leaders and development campaigners for the G-7 group of nations to recommit to the world’s most vulnerable children and get the Millennium Development Goals for education back on track.

The signatories of the open letter, published today as the G-7 meets in Brussels, warn that the unacceptable decline in aid to basic education, particularly in the world’s poorest countries, is a major factor in the global community slipping far behind its stated target to achieve universal primary education for the world’s children.

Commenting on the publication of the letter, Chris Keates, General Secretary, said:

“The UK Government and other world leaders must commit to fully support the Global Partnership for Education and pledge the necessary funding to provide quality education for all children, including those living in conflict-affected areas.

“57 million primary children are denied access to school and nearly 40% of the world’s boys and girls lack the most basic reading and counting skills.

“Ending poverty of educational entitlement is achievable and is certainly not inevitable.

“G-7 leaders have the opportunity at the forthcoming Global Partnership for Education to affirm their commitment to achieving the target of securing quality education for all.”
