CIOB commissions UK NARIC benchmarking study

The Chartered Institute of Building's MCIOB qualification has been benchmarked as comparable to a bachelor's degree level under the English Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF).

The CIOB commissioned a study carried out by the National Recognition Information Centre (UK NARIC) to determine the overall comparability of the CIOB's chartered membership grades against national qualification standards.

The benchmarking study focussed on the learning outcomes of the Professional Review. Results indicate that the MCIOB grade is comparable to a level 6 qualification under QCF, additionally meeting some level 7 criteria.

The CIOB's Fellowship grade – the FCIOB – was also benchmarked, attaining a mixture of level 7 and level 8 competencies, comparable to post graduate level study.

Ros Thorpe, Head of Education at the CIOB said, "By benchmarking our qualifications against competency and educational standards both nationally and internationally we are able to increase recognition of the MCIOB and FCIOB across the world."

"The results of this assessment are an endorsement of the high standards of the Professional Review and the value of chartered membership qualifications."

The study found that the key strengths of the MCIOB and FCIOB grades include the ability to review and measure the competencies of professionals working in the construction industry to meet the standards expected of a Chartered Builder.

UK NARIC praised the CIOB's inclusive approach to chartered membership. The CIOB has routes to suit all professionals working in the built environment from those with extensive experience but no academic qualifications to new graduates entering the industry. Chartered professionals are entitled to use the MCIOB designation, which is awarded after the successful completion of the CIOB's Professional Review.
