Engineering Council appoints new head

Infrastructure specialist Alasdair Coates MCIHT has been announced as the Engineering Council’s new chief executive. He takes up the post on 13 March.

Alasdair previously worked for Network Rail as the route managing director for its South East region and has more than 30 years’ experience of planning, designing, managing and implementing infrastructure schemes.

His earlier roles included being Halcrow’s managing director for transportation and international operations director for transportation for CH2M, following its acquisition of Halcrow.

“I am delighted to join the Engineering Council and take forward the organisation’s crucial work of regulating and promoting the engineering profession,” he says. “I know how essential it is for engineers and technicians to be competent and constantly developing their skills, particularly with the pace of change in today’s industries.”

He takes over from deputy chief executive Paul Bailey, who has been at the helm since former chief executive Jon Prichard left in January.

Chairman of the Engineering Council Rear Admiral Nigel Guild says: “We look forward to welcoming Alasdair, who will be a great asset to the Engineering Council. His extensive industry experience, combined with his commitment to the work of professional engineering institutions, make him the ideal professional to take the organisation forward.”
