BASC has reported an animal campaign group for attempting to portray affiliation to the Conservative Party.
The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation has no official link to the political party despite also using its logo.
The Foundation was co-founded last year by Lorraine Platt, and the organisation’s website says she is the public face of its campaigning activities and directs daily operations. The website makes no mention of her status as a trustee of the League Against Cruel Sports and founder or co-founder of several other organisations which take extremist positions against shooting.
The Foundation has published an anti-shooting manifesto which demands the government launches an enquiry into commercial driven shoots, ban snares and introduces a statutory close season for hares.
BASC chairman Peter Glenser said: “This Foundation clearly wants to present a façade of respectability, when the reality is that its figurehead is also aligned to an extremist organisation. The group should come clean on all of its links to the extremists.
“Many within the Conservative Party recognise the true value of shooting to conservation and to the economies of fragile rural communities. They understand that it is worth £2 billion to the UK economy and supports the equivalent of 74,000 full-time jobs.
“BASC has reported the Foundation to the Conservative Party and hope the Party will ensure that this Foundation drops ‘Conservative’ from its title and stops using the political party’s logo. This Foundation’s insidious attempt to propagate their anti-shooting extremism should not be allowed to go unchecked.”
