NASUWT comments on ‘educate against hate’ announcement from Nicky Morgan

Commenting on the ‘Educate Against Hate’ announcement by Nicky Morgan, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“The NASUWT has always maintained the importance of ensuring that all children and young people are kept safe from physical and mental abuse, indoctrination and hatred.

“Teachers and school leaders take seriously the importance of protecting children and young people from all forms of extremism.

“The Government needs to recognise that whilst children and young people spend only a fraction of their lives in school, the barriers to effective information-sharing and collaboration between schools and other agencies must also be removed.

“There is tremendous demand for relevant, balanced and trustworthy advice and resources to assist the work of schools in keeping children safe from all forms of extremism and harm, and teachers will want the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Government’s ‘Educate Against Hate’ website.

“However, the Government needs to take seriously the need to address the impact of its decisions which have cut support for children and families and created a highly fragmented system that risks many more children falling through the net.

“The NASUWT will be making clear to the Government the importance of having in place clear and enforceable measures to safeguard children and young people, and recognise that additional resources will be needed to improve collaboration and information-sharing between schools and other agencies working with children and families.”
