Education must be a fundamental human right
Commenting on the inclusion of quality education as one of the Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers union in the UK, said:
“NASUWT members and all those who are committed to the cause of quality education, eliminating poverty and building fairer societies should be congratulated for their determined campaigning which has helped to achieve the inclusion of quality education as one of the key global goals for the planet.
“The UK and governments around the world have accepted that quality education is a fundamental human right for every child, a right that can only be delivered with qualified teachers, quality resources and safe and secure classrooms and schools.
“Despite the agreement at the United Nations Summit, we must not forget that today over 60 million children, mainly girls, are denied access to education.
“The challenge of securing access to schooling is being further compounded by the refugee crisis which has resulted in tens of millions of children missing out on school as a result of war, terrorism, sectarian hatred and discrimination.
“Every child has a right to quality education for a better future.
“Governments around the world now need to put their money where their mouths are by investing in quality education that is available to and accessible by every child.
“The NASUWT welcomes the commitment by the UK Parliament to invest 0.7% of GDP in international development. The Government must now work to demonstrate that this investment is being used to secure the goal of universal access to quality education for all.”
