How should the transition from cockpit to office be made?

Date: 17th March 2015 – 18th March 2015
Time: 9.00 – 17.00hrs
Location: Royal Aeronautical Society

Following on from the successful ‘The Aircraft Commander in the 21st Century’ series of conferences, The Flight Operations Group (FOG) of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) is continuing its theme of aviation leadership in the 21st Century with this conference.

For some time the FOG has been concerned about the way pilots transition from the cockpit to flight operations management. In most other management roles within today’s airlines there is a career progression that prepares the manager for each new role. However, in the case of flight operations management, a pilot is often promoted straight from the cockpit into a management role with no previous applicable experience or training. There is a massive transition from the very specific and specialist environment of the cockpit to a general management role that requires the new manager to lead, manage and motivate a group of crewmembers. The requirements for nominated persons (post-holders) are regulated, but the requirements for other management roles are not.

This conference will examine the role of the flight operations manager. Leading airlines from around the world will present their best practices and advice. In addition, experts from other businesses and industries will present their views on the essential skills that a new flight operations manager needs, such as labour relations, budgeting, and project management. Most importantly, workshops will provide real tools and methods for prospective, new or experienced flight operations managers to take away and use.

Details of the programme (available shortly) can be found by clicking the link on the right hand side. Registration for this conference will be open shortly.
