Breast Cancer Care responds to review suggesting false cancer alarm discourages future checks
Responding to a review of 19 research papers, funded by Cancer Research UK, which reported information on cancer false alarms and the impact on people reporting future symptoms, including six carried out in the UK, Davinia Green, Head of Breast Awareness and Early Detection at Breast Cancer Care, says:
“It is worrying to hear that some women won’t carry on checking their breasts after a false alarm of breast cancer.
“An earlier all-clear doesn’t mean they won’t develop cancer in the future and spotting the signs of breast cancer early is vital. An early diagnosis can mean simpler and more effective treatment – it can potentially be live-saving.
“Most breast cancers are found by women themselves so it is incredibly important they know the signs and symptoms and crucially aren’t put off going to their GP if they find something. Anyone with questions can call Breast Cancer Care on 0808 800 6000.”
