NASUWT comments on Ofsted behaviour inspections

Commenting on the announcement from Ofsted of no-notice pupil behaviour inspections, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“This announcement raises more questions than it answers.

“What criteria will be used to determine which schools will be inspected?

“Schools will want to know what the threshold will be at which levels of concern from parents or inspectors are sufficient to trigger a behaviour inspection and the implications of Ofsted’s inspections.

“The support available from local authorities and other children’s services to help schools manage and promote positive pupil behaviour has been savagely cut by the Coalition Government.

“Important initiatives such as pupil behaviour and attendance partnerships, which were making a demonstrable contribution to supporting schools to manage pupil behaviour, have been axed.

“If Ofsted is serious about promoting good behaviour in our schools it needs to investigate the impact of the removal of these programmes and must insist that the Coalition Government provides the support schools need.”
