People United – bus tour departs People’s Assembly to build the People’s Manifesto

Where: Westminster Central Hall, Storey’s Gate, London SW1H 9NH.

When: Saturday 22 June 2013 12:30pm – 13:00pm

Tomorrow (22 June), over 4,000 people attending the People’s Assembly will be waving off two People United buses on their two week journeys which will see them visit over 25 towns and cities across England to build the People’s Manifesto.

A coalition of unions – Unite, Unison, GMB, PCS and CWU, along with the TUC have come together this summer to help ordinary people give voice to their ideas about how to change their country for the better.

Both buses will end their journeys on Friday 5 July at Trafford hospital – the birthplace of the NHS – with a party to celebrate the 65 birthday of the now at risk National Health Service.

Following the departure of the buses, general secretary of Unite Len McCluskey will address the People’s Assembly at approximately 3:30pm. In his speech he is expected to warn of an out-of-touch government saying:

“We have a government and a ruling elite who have no concept of the struggles of ordinary people. While food banks run out because of soaring demand, the prime minister tweets about his lavish dinner at this week’s G8 summit.”

He will go on to say that we need to build a people’s movement that defeats an out-of-touch government, saying:

“We need to go back to our communities and build confidence and hope. We cannot let the spirit of the People’s Assembly fade. We need to capture the spirit here today and show that there is an alternative to the failed experiment in austerity.”

On the same day, Unite will also be unveiling the results of a survey of ‘Everyday England’ covering 14 English towns and cities involved in this summer’s People United bus tour.
