NASUWT: Teachers work hard day in day out to achieve targets
Commenting on the Secretary of State for Education’s announcement on the primary and secondary programmes of study, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“Teachers and school leaders are committed to raising standards and work hard day in and day out to achieve this.
“Their dedication and commitment has resulted in a world class education system with record levels of achievement in both the primary and secondary sectors.
“If raising standards was as simple as just tinkering with the content of programmes of study no education system would have any problems.
“The reality is that focussing on programmes of study, however important they may be, is a calculated move designed to distract from the Coalition Government’s failure to address the barriers that help children reach their full potential.
“While the Secretary of State talks about heroes and heroines, great rivers and capital cities, this Government is making unprecedented, savage cuts to the services on which children, young people and their families rely.
“It is an inconvenient truth for the Secretary of State that the international evidence he so frequently cites, emphasises the importance of tackling the causes of poverty and social and economic inequality that blight children and young people’s educational prospects, something which the Coalition Government fails to do.”
