Banding funding is “flawed and unfair” says NASUWT

Responding to the announcement by Education Minister Leighton Andrews on additional funding which is to be provided to schools which have been placed in Bands 4 and 5, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in Wales, said:

“Whilst this additional funding will be welcome news for those schools that have ended up in Bands 4 and 5 this year, those schools that moved out of the lower bands because of the additional funding they received last year will now lose the additional funding they had received to improve standards.

“The flaws in the banding system are self evident. Rather than giving ‘alms’ to the schools in the lower bands, the Welsh Government needs to address the underfunding of all schools as a matter of urgency.

“What is needed is sustained investment in schools to address the years of underinvestment, not short-term solutions.”

Rex Phillips, NASUWT Wales Organiser, said:

“Schools and teachers across Wales will despair at the unfairness of the banding system.

“Whilst there may be no ‘fog’ surrounding the funding for banding, the banding funding system is flawed and unfair.”
