NUT: Children with cancer can be at risk of bullying

Children with Cancer

Commenting on the CLIC Sargent report No child with cancer left out, which looks at the impact of cancer on children’s primary school education, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“It is important that children living with cancer should be given the individual support they need to feel an integrated part of the school. Sometimes it is nothing more than lack of knowledge and fear of something different that can give rise to bullying.

“Much is already done to address bullying and as the report says a majority of parents have positive comments on their children's experience of support in school."

“No bullying should go unreported. Children and young people should be given the confidence by their teachers to report any such behaviour and for that behaviour to be dealt with effectively and quickly. Home and hospital education services also play an important role in supporting children with cancer and their families.”
