NUT Cymru: Regulators need to ensure no repeat of exam fiasco

Wales’ largest teaching union has urged exam regulators to ensure there is no repeat of the chaos and confusion seen this summer in relation to GCSE English.  The Union’s call comes as over 2,000 students in Wales saw their papers re-graded to reflect a fairer assessment of their performance.

NUT Cymru says that it has been unacceptable that these students’ futures have been left in limbo while regulators have attempted to unravel the problems associated with the awarding of this qualification.

NUT Wales Secretary, David Evans said:

“We are pleased that the Welsh Government has ensured that pupils in Wales are fairly rewarded for their hard work by initiating a re-grade.  It would have been an injustice to see thousands of Welsh students receive grades below those which their dedication merited.

“However, while the end result has been a relief to many pupils, parents and teachers in Wales, the fact remains that this situation should never have occurred in the first instance.  Quite clearly it is important that all regulators get their act together and ensure this mess is not repeated in future.

“There is now an urgent need for the different regulators to work together when dealing with the same exam to ensure that any issues are addressed.  We cannot have a repeat of this scenario which has caused such anxiety for pupils, parents and teachers.”
