NUT: Govt has no intention of honouring its promises on pensions

Commenting on the publication of the Public Service Pensions Bill today, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“The Government is pressing ahead with its attacks on public sector pensions.  The overwhelming majority of teachers reject the Government’s plans to make teachers work until 68 or even later for much lower pensions than now.  The NUT, alongside other unions, will continue to campaign against those proposals.

“The Bill also shows that the Government has no intention of honouring its commitment that the new pension schemes would last for at least 25 years.  All the Bill requires is that the Government consults before imposing further changes.  This is totally inadequate and a further breach of promise.”
