NUT: Future of Welsh Qualifications must be evidence based

Wales' largest teaching union has warned that any changes to the qualifications system in Wales should be backed by sound evidence. NUT Cymru say the on-going qualifications consultation rather than any knee-jerk reaction to recent events, should be the deciding factor in shaping the future of qualifications in Wales.

NUT Cymru secretary, David Evans, said:

"Decisions about the future of the Welsh qualifications system are hugely important and need to be firmly based on sound evidence. The Welsh Government has commissioned a consultation and it is essential that any changes made are a result of input received via that process.

"Recent concerns about the GCSE English result, and political interference from Westminster relating to that exam, may impact on the Ministers thinking. Naturally those developments will play a part in this debate. However, it would be wrong to make any knee-jerk reactions based on that issue that will have longer lasting impacts on the delivery and validity of learners qualifications in Wales.

"Ensuring there is clear, reputable and proven evidence used as the basis of future decisions is key to establishing a system that is widely respected.  We have to ensure that what is delivered in schools will equip learners with the right skills and is valued by further and higher education institutions and employers."
