NASUWT: Stonewall homophobic bullying research “disturbing and unacceptable”

Commenting on the publication of Stonewall’s School Report 2012 into homophobic bullying in schools, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

"These are deeply disturbing figures cataloguing the unacceptable abuse children and young people are facing.

"Unfortunately, too many parents and too many schools, while taking some aspects of prejudice-related bullying seriously, still consider homophobic taunting, name calling and abuse as part of growing up or dismiss it as banter between pupils.

"This survey should be a wake up call for the Government.

"Unless the Government takes seriously the need to have measures in place to monitor and ensure that schools are tackling this behaviour then I fear that the next survey will show that more and more children and young people have been traumatised and damaged by this abuse."
