NUT: Our Vision for Education

Commenting after the debate on Motion 31, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers? union, said;

?The NUT has a proud tradition of developing positive proposals for the education service aimed at improving and enhancing children and young people?s future life-chances.

?In the recent NUT commissioned YouGov research ?Allow Teachers to Teach?*, teachers told us that what they most enjoy about their jobs is seeing children and young people develop, progress and achieve.

?However there are many issues that get in the way of this. Excessive testing, targets, over-prescription and ministerial diktat are stifling our education system. This top down culture is cheating children and young people of the stimulating experience that being at school should be and creating.

?The Government?s academies and free schools programme is threatening the existence of a democratically accountable education system in this country. There is no convincing evidence that they improve standards in schools. The Education Secretary?s obsession with privatising our education system must be stopped. We need to see education policies which are for the benefit of all our children not just the few?.
