Big Lottery Fund: Big grants bring York and Humber communities together

Projects aimed at bringing communities together and reducing isolation across Yorkshire and the Humber are among those receiving funding today from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).

Some 44 groups in the region are sharing over £387,000 from BIG’s Awards for All programme (see attached list of grants for projects in your area).

In Wakefield, KIDS has received over £9,800 to run activities and days out for the siblings of young disabled people, so they can get respite from their caring responsibilities and meet other children in similar situations. Meanwhile in Rotherham, Apna Haq Ltd will use their £8,610 grant to bring people of different backgrounds together to create a mosaic on a derelict wall, as a display of the cultural diversity in the area.

The Sheffield Wildlife Trust will be encouraging people to come together to protect and enjoy their local green spaces, and has been awarded £6,400 to train volunteers in dry stone walling, hedge laying, planting and fencing. Meanwhile the Pontefract Community Partnership receives £6,629 to train volunteers to carry out a community survey, to establish community needs and enable volunteer and community organisations to meet those needs.

£10,000 also goes to the Envirocare Britain Association in Bradford to provide NVQ training and local work placements to 100 young people, in a bid to help them improve their employment prospects. The project will also encourage participants to become involved in helping out with local community groups. While in Barnsley, the High View Primary Learning Centre has been awarded £9,460 to purchase video conference equipment so pupils from different schools can communicate with each other. Participants will also take part in an overnight trip away. This will enable young people from different backgrounds to learn about each other's cultural, racial and religious differences.

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the Yorkshire and Humber region, said: “Awards for All offers relatively small grants that enable groups to make a big impact on the lives of people and communities most in need. All the projects receiving funding this month are great examples of that and we are proud to be able to support them.”

BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply. Visit www.awardsforall.org.uk or phone 0845 410 20 30 for more information.
