NASUWT: Chief inspector only tells half the story

Commenting on the speech by the Chief Inspector of Schools to the ASCL Conference in Birmingham today, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“The Chief Inspector is right to point out that the UK has the best school leaders in the world, but why does he insist only on telling half the story?

“The international evidence confirms that in the UK we also have the best teachers and world class standards of education.

“The Chief Inspector should also recognise that the evidence of world beating education systems highlights that subjecting teachers to punishing criticism and diktat will only serve to weaken the quality of teaching and learning in schools.

“The Chief Inspector is right to recognise the value of having more people with current experience of leading schools involved in leading the inspection of schools. However, improving schools means that inspections must be the preserve of all teachers, not just headteachers.

“In the best education systems in the world it's not good enough for headteachers to spend all their time not teaching. The best headteachers lead and inspire others by demonstrating their own commitment to teaching not by monitoring them to destruction to satisfy the inspection regime.”
