NASUWT helps prepare teachers for the 21st Century

The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, will be representing the UK teaching profession at a key international education summit in New York this week.

The second International Summit on the Future of the Teaching Profession opens today and is hosted by Education International (EI), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the US Department of Education.

Education ministers, union leaders and teachers from 23 countries and regions will attend the event, including John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning.

The two-day event will look at developing school leaders, preparing teachers for the delivery of 21st century skills and preparing them to work where they are most needed.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“The teaching profession is constantly evolving and adapting to reflect changing circumstances and this summit is an opportunity to share the best practice that exists across the highest-performing education nations in the world. Teachers and school leaders in the UK are rightly helping to lead this debate.

“It is vital that teaching is seen as an attractive and rewarding career choice in order to cope with the increased demands on the education sector and the high-level skills needed to secure sustained recovery from the economic crisis.”

Patrick Roach, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT and EI Executive Board member, will be attending the event. He said:

“As the UK’s largest teaching union, the NASUWT will be playing an active role in this summit as we prepare to meet the challenges facing the education sector in the years to come.

"NASUWT members across the UK are committed to Standing up for Standards, ensuring that every pupil has access to world-class educational opportunities.

“It is impossible to deny that the quality of a country's education rests upon the quality of its teachers. Ensuring that teachers receive the professional time, resources, training and development and rewards they need will be a critical challenge for the Government if it is to retain its seat at the table of the leading education nations in the world.”
