BASC launches instructional pigeon shooting days

The UK's largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), will run a programme of instructional 'How to' pigeon shooting days.

The one day courses are aimed at increasing participants' skills and enjoyment and helping people to stay safe and within the law.

The courses will cover;
• Pigeon shooting and the law.
• Gun safety.
• Woodpigeon shooting (decoying, flighting and roost shooting).
• Dangers in the field.
• Guns and cartridges.
• Pattern testing and range judging.
• Decoy patterns.
• Carcass preparation.

Courses will be held at Staple Fitzpaine, near Taunton in Somerset, on 20th April; at Chelmsford in Essex on 23rd March and at Stockton on Tees on 28th April. A course will be held in the South East in September.

Courses will include classroom and practical sessions and will run from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

Places cost £45 for BASC members and £65 for non-members, which includes lunch.

Glynn Evans, BASC's head of game and gamekeeping, said: "Woodpigeon are the UK's number one agricultural pest. These courses are designed to improve crop protection. More and more people are finding pigeon shooting is a cheap and rewarding form of shooting and a fabulous source of food. These courses cater for a range of abilities. They are designed for anyone from the novice taking up pigeon shooting to the more experienced shot."

Availability is limited so in order to guarantee places, people need to book as soon as they can.
