RSPCA: Thousands of animals in danger rescued round-the-clock

Last year, the RSPCA rescued nearly 160,000 animals which were suffering for all kinds of reasons, including being trapped, neglected or abused.

Just over 40,000 of these were cats, nearly 37,000 were wild birds and 19,000 were wild mammals. A new fundraising campaign launched today (Monday June 27) draws attention to this rescue service – highlighting the variety of rescues that our inspectors perform on a daily basis and the breadth of the work that goes on behind the scenes at the animal welfare charity.

The ‘24/7’ project features a 90 second advert, which will play across national TV and aims to show what the RSPCA does 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It starts with footage of a call being taken at a control centre and then swings into action with snapshots of rescues. An Inspector brandishes a net; another abseils down a cliff to save sheep stuck on a ledge; and yet another discovers a starving, emaciated puppy shut inside a grimy shed.

There will also be a 24 hour tweet-a-thon on August 3, towards the end of the campaign. For the first time, inspectors will tweet live incidents round-the-clock and as they happen, from RSPCA’s national control centre.

RSPCA Inspector Tony Woodley said: “I don’t think people realise the full extent and variety of what the RSPCA does and I hope this campaign helps to raise awareness.“From abuse to neglect and injury to being trapped – animals suffer in so many different ways and have to put up with so many kinds of danger and pain.

“The emergency calls we receive reflects this, and the scope of rescues which our frontline team are called to as a result is immense. “Whether it is an injured hedgehog in need of treatment, an abandoned kitten in need of a home, or a bedraggled, abused dog in need of rescuing from a cruel owner – the common them is that they all need our help.”
