The elected mayor of Stoke-on-Trent has been arrested in an investigation into alleged corruption.

Mark Merideth, Labour, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and complicity in corruption while in public office.

The arrest follows that of Stoke-on-Trent city councillor Roger Ibbs, a Conservative and Independent Alliance group leader who stood down earlier this week.

Staffordshire police described the force’s investigation as “thorough, objective and detailed”.

Mr Meredith has been in the post of mayor since May 2005, when he beat incumbent independent Mike Wolfe.

Openly gay, Mr Merideth had previously held various posts in the party, but the win was his first attempt at public office.
