NASUWT condemns the school banding system as fundamentally flawed
The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in Wales, has called on the Welsh Government to revisit the whole concept of banding of schools.
Seconding a motion on school banding at the Wales TUC Conference in Llandudno, Tim Cox, NASUWT National Executive Member, will cast doubt on the credibility and usefulness of the school banding system.
Mr Cox will say:
“The system is not only divisive, it is fundamentally flawed.
“There is no fairness in a system that fails to celebrate sustained success
“There is no fairness in a system that seeks to redistribute resources on a short-term, quick-fix, temporary basis
“There is no fairness in a system that allows the efforts of teachers, support staff and pupils alike, to be diminished and denigrated through a league table
“The Minster is revisiting his plans to introduce primary school banding, which we welcome, but the Welsh Government needs to revisit the whole concept of banding.”
Chris Keates, NASUWT, General Secretary, said:
“Teachers and school leaders feel totally demoralised by the focus on policies which denigrate rather than celebrate achievement.
“School banding might initially have been well-intentioned but it is being distorted into the crude ranking of schools which benefits no one.”
