David Anderson – CIHT President for 2012 – 13
The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) is pleased to announce the inauguration of David Anderson as its new President for 2012/13.
At his inaugural meeting David set out his aims for CIHT in the Institution’s 82nd year.
“The Institution is changing and evolving as all good things must. Over the last year, we have promoted the status of the transportation profession and the professionals who work in this industry.”
David’s theme for the year is “Why transport matters to you”. This will be developed throughout the course of David’s year. There are plans to focus on the raising of the Institution’s profile and to enhance the support provided to members, business and the industry.
David Anderson CIHT President said:
“The Institution will continue to engage proactively with politicians, the media and other key stakeholders to highlight the vital role that we play in developing and improving society and the economy.”
“CIHT has been calling for investment in infrastructure and are pleased that the government is acknowledging the role that this will play in the UK’s economic recovery and we will continue to call for a balanced long-term investment programme.”
“Communication is vital in raising and strengthening the profile of the Institution. The multiplying effect of communications, both Twitter and Linkedin, allows direct outreach not only to our members, but to our stakeholders, the media and the general public. At the inauguration David launched a new member recruitment campaign, which will focus on increasing CIHT’s membership over the next 12 months.
“We all face many challenges in today’s economic climate. I aim to provide effective leadership to ensure that we increase our membership, whilst focusing on retaining the members we have through providing relevant services and ensuring value for money. It is important that members’, and the organisations that they work for, continue to see the value in being involved with the Institution. “

David Anderson
David is Head of Planning and Design at Transport Scotland where he leads a team comprising transport planners, engineers, modellers and policy specialists. Transport Scotland is responsible for the trunk roads and railways within Scotland as well as for ports, harbours and ferries, bus policy, low carbon vehicles and aviation policy. Transport Scotland has approximately 350 staff with an annual budget of approximately £2bn.
David has 25 years’ experience and recently has had the responsibility for the delivery of the Scottish Strategic Transport Projects Review. Recommending transport interventions for delivery over the next twenty years that make a significant contribution to the Scottish Government’s central Purpose of increasing sustainable economic growth, including a replacement Forth Crossing, this is the largest project of its type undertaken in Scotland. Other recent work includes responsibility for the delivery of the Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) and strategic Land Use and Transport Modelling capabilities across Transport Scotland.
David joined CIHT Council in 2007 and has served on Transport Policy Board, Learned Society Board as well as Education and Member Services Board. He was Chairman of the Central & Southern Scotland Branch in 2010, having served on the Branch committee since 1999.
