Dwindling prospects for young people – shameful

Commenting on the findings of the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s “Is Britain Fairer?” report, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“It is shameful indictment of the economic and social policies of the last five years, being continued by the Government, that young people have the worst economic prospects for several generations.

“Yet the Government continues to adversely affect the life chances of millions of children and young people with potential cuts to tax credits and a failure to tackle poverty.

“The marketisation and privatisation of our great public education service compounds this disadvantage with access to important educational opportunities, for too many children and young people, now on the basis of parents’ ability to pay.

“Children and young people are bearing the brunt of these ideologically driven, callous policies.”
