Paul Blomfield

Biography:

Paul Blomfield was re-elected as Labour MP for Sheffield Central on May 7th 2015 with 24308 votes, taking 55.0% of the vote.

While still at school, Paul joined the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM). He set up Sheffield AAM which became the UK’s biggest anti-apartheid group and was an active member of the national leadership of the Movement.

During the 1980s he was involved in the Sheffield Campaign Against Racism and a member of Sheffield’s Race Equality Council.

He joined the Labour Party in 1978. Since 1993, Paul was the Chair of Sheffield Labour Party. He was a Unison Branch Secretary for several years, and is a member of Unite the Union.

In 1994 Paul joined the Board of Sheffield City Trust and between 1997 and 2008 was its Chair.

After studying Theology at St.John’s College in York, and qualifying as a teacher, Paul returned to Sheffield and worked at the University of Sheffield. He was the General Manager of the Students’ Union. He was also a Governor of Sheffield City Polytechnic for many years.

He is married to Linda McAvan, who is a Labour Member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber. He has one son, Michael.

He is the parliamentary private secretary to Hilary Benn MP, shadow communities & local government secretary.
