Margaret Curran

Biography:

Margaret Curran was elected as Labour MP for Glasgow East on May 6th 2010 with a majority of 11,840.

Margaret was first elected to represent Glasgow Baillieston at the inception of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, and then re-elected in 2003 and again in 2007. Before entering the Scottish Parliament she was a lecturer in community education at the University of Strathclyde and before that a community worker.

Since 1999, she held several posts in the Scottish parliament. She was as the Convener of the Housing, Social Justice & Voluntary Sector Committee and was later promoted to the position of Deputy Minister for Social Justice in 2001.

A few years later, she was promoted to Cabinet rank.

She remained on the Front-Bench as Shadow spokesperson for Health and Wellbeing before being a Cabinet Member with responsibilities for Policy Development. She also works closely with organisations such as the Glasgow East Women’s Aid, which supports victims of domestic abuse in the area.

Ongoing local campaigns include finding and securing adequate social housing in the area, particularly for local families with young children and getting improvements to local roads and transport services.

In October 2011 she was made shadow Scottish secretary. ‘<' . strtolower('Array')>
