Jim McGovern

Biography:

Jim McGovern was re-elected MP for Dundee West in May 2010 with a majority of 7,278.

Jim has been the MP for Dundee West since May 2005 and has lived in Dundee for most of his life. Jim currently lives in the Law area with his wife Norma, and has two grown up children.

He was born in 1956 in Glasgow but moved to Dundee when he was nine years old. Jim left school aged 15 and begun an apprenticeship as a glazier at 16 doing this job for 14 years until being made redundant in 1987. He then worked as a glazier with Dundee District Council Public Works Department for 10 years. Throughout his employment with Dundee District Council Jim was very active within his Trade Union the GMB and in 1997 he started working full time for them as a Trade Union Organiser.

He was first elected to the British House of Commons at the 2005 general election for Dundee West with a 14.6% majority, following the retirement of the sitting Labour MP Ernie Ross. Since 2005 he has served on the Scottish Affairs Committee, and from 2007 he has served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Pat McFadden the Minister of State at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, before resigning over the row surrounding the privatisation of Royal Mail.
