James Brokenshire was elected to serve Hornchurch & Rainham as the Member of Parliament in May 2005. In November 2006 he was appointed to the Conservative front bench as a Shadow Home Affairs Minister. James previously served as a member of the Constitutional Affairs Select Committee.

James is married to Cathrine and the couple have three young children – two daughters (Sophie born in November 2002 and Jemma born in April 2005) and one son (Benjamin born in August 2006).

Born in 1968 in Southend-on-Sea, James spent the first few years of his life in Basildon before the family settled in Loughton where James went to school at Davenant Foundation Grammar School. James also attended the Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies before going to university at Exeter where he graduated with an honours degree in law.

Before entering Parliament James was a partner at a large international law firm where he advised a range of companies, businesses and financial institutions on company law, mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance deals.

James has held office within the Conservative Party over a twenty year period. He was Vice Chairman of the National Young Conservatives and Chairman of Eastern Area Young Conservatives; James is also a former Deputy Chairman of Epping Forest Conservative Association.

He served on John Major’s campaign tour team during the 1996 European Elections, was a press officer at Conservative Central Office during the 1997 General Election and provided press and media briefings for Essex Area Conservatives during the 2001 General Election.

James is an active community campaigner and has supported a range of local campaigns across Elm Park, Hornchurch, Rainham & Wennington including campaigns to:

stop bed cuts at St George’s Hospital, Hornchurch and improve local health facilities;
prevent overdevelopment and protect green spaces across the constituency;
stop Rainham being treated as a dumping zone for London’s problems when the area needs positive regeneration and investment to upskill the community and take advantage of the potential opportunities arising from being in the Thames Gateway;
secure additional police resources for Hornchurch and install CCTV cameras in Hornchurch & Elm Park to combat crime and the fear of crime;
stop an international moto-cross track being established in Rainham;
keep the R J Mitchell primary school open;
prevent the closure of sub-post offices across Hornchurch; and
stop new mobile phone masts from being put up in inappropriate sites across the local area.
Following the implentation of boundary changes at the next General Election, the Hornchurch constituency will be abolished and James has been selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate to fight the seat of Old Bexley & Sidcup at the next election.

In Parliament, James has served on committees scrutinising the Consumer Credit Bill, the Equalities Bill, the Police and Justice Bill, the Corporate Manslaughter Bill, the Offender Management Bill and the Companies Bill (the largest piece of legislation in Parliamentary history) where he led for the Opposition from the front bench on various aspects of the Bill and secured a number of important concessions from the Government.

As a Shadow Crime Reduction Minister James is responsible for helping to develop Conservative policy on issues relating to gun and gang crime, knife crime, drug crime, anti-social behaviour, fraud and on-line crime.

James has also secured adjournment debates on health services in Havering, the dangers of pirate radio and the impact of changes to newspaper distribution arrangements. He has pressed the Government on injustices arising from current extradition arrangements, the need for improvements to transport security and policing and the need to change attitudes towards mental health. Between 2011 and 2014 he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Crime and Security, and in 2015 he was appointed Minister of State for Immigration.

During his time as a member of the Constitutional Affairs Select Committee James took part in inquiries on the Small Claims Court, the reform of the Coroner’s Service, the impact of the ‘compensation culture’, the Freedom of Information Act and reforms to party political funding.
