Hugh Robertson

Biography:

Hugh Robertson was re-elected MP for Faversham and Mid Kent in May 2010 with a majority of 17,088.

Hugh Robertson was born in the Kent and Canterbury Hospital on the 9th October 1962. He was educated at The King’s School Canterbury, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Reading University where he gained a BSc (Honours) degree in Land Management specialising in property investment.

He won an army scholarship to university and was then an army officer from 1985 – 1995, serving in The Life Guards. He won the Armourers’ & Brasiers’ Prize for the top officer on the Royal Armoured Corps Young Officers’ Course and commanded The Household Cavalry on the 1993 Queen’s Birthday Parade and State Opening of Parliament. He was awarded The Sultan of Brunei’s Personal Order of Merit for his work during the 1992 state visit. He saw active service in Northern Ireland commanding a platoon in Londonderry and Fermanagh, during the Gulf War as Adjutant of a main battle tank regiment, in Bosnia commanding the British Detachment in Sarajevo during the siege of the city and with the UN in Cyprus. He retired as a Major in 1995, following his selection for Staff College, in order to pursue a political career.

From 1995 until being elected to Parliament in June 2001, he worked in the investment management arm of Schroders latterly as Head of New Business Development for the Property division responsible for pension fund, local authority and charity investment in the UK property sector. He was also an Assistant Director of Schroder Investment Management.

He was selected as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Faversham and Mid Kent in March 2000 and elected to Parliament in June 2001, with a majority of 4,183. He made his maiden speech about the preservation of Kent’s countryside and the importance of fruit farming. He has been Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Fruit Group since his election in 2001 and was the Chairman of the All Party United Nations Group from 2005-2008. He was appointed a Governor of the Westminster Foundation for democracy in 2005.

He was promoted to the Conservative front bench in November 2002 as a Conservative Whip before becoming Shadow Sports Spokesman in September 2004. He became Shadow Minister for Sport in February 2005. He was re-elected to Parliament on 5th May 2005 with an increased majority of 8,720 which accounted for 50% of the votes cast. He was reappointed Shadow Sports Minister. Following the successful bid for the London Olympics, Hugh was also appointed Shadow Olympics Minister. He was one of the original Parliamentary supporters of David Cameron’s leadership bid and following his victory, retained his current portfolio of Shadow Sports and Olympics Minister.

In May 2002 Hugh married Anna Copson and they have a son. Hugh is a playing member of the MCC and played both cricket and hockey for his university and Sandhurst. He supports Chelsea FC in his spare time.
