Barbara Keeley

Biography:

Barbara Keeley was re-elected MP for Worsley and Eccles South on May 7th 2015 with 18600 votes, taking 44.2% of the vote.

Barbara Keeley was elected as the Labour Member of Parliament for the Worsley Constituency in 2005 with 18,859 votes (51% of votes cast) with a majority of 9,368.

Barbara was brought up in Leeds attending Mount St Mary’s College and studied at Salford University, gaining a BSc in Politics and Contemporary History. In her early career Barbara worked for a number of years in the computer industry for IBM, where she gained experience with manufacturing, retail and commercial companies and the public sector. She has worked as a consultant and manager with local, regional and national charities and voluntary organisations. Between 2000 and 2003, Barbara co-authored three national reports on carer’s issues, which were published by a large national carers’ charity.

In local government, she was a leading councillor in Trafford between 1995 and June 2004 and served as the Cabinet Portfolio holder for Services for Children and Young People and for Health and Well-being.

From 2005 to 2006 Barbara was a member of the Constitutional Affairs Select Committee and from January 2006 to date she has been a member of the Finance and Services Committee. Barbara’s policy interests include Equality, Health, Carers, Regeneration and her country interests include the EU and the Middle East and Tibet.

Barbara was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Cabinet Office from February 2006 and then a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Minister of State Jim Murphy at the Department of Work and Pensions from 2006 to 2007.

In June 2007, Barbara was appointed by Gordon Brown to lead the Labour Party’s manifesto work on Social Care and also as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Harriet Harman QC as Minister for Women and Equality. Barbara has been vice-chair of the All Party Group on Carers and was the Parliamentary Champion for Carers Week in 2007. She was the Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party Women’s Committee from June 2007 to October 2008.

In October 2008 Barbara was appointed by the Prime Minister to the Government as an Assistant Whip.

Barbara is married and her interests outside politics include jogging to keep fit and listening to live music.
