NASUWT comments on BSF report

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“Scrapping the Building Schools for the Future programmed was an unmitigated disaster which should never have happened.

“Today’s report makes the point that whilst more could have been done to make the programme more efficient, it simply did not need to be axed.

“The Coalition Government is wasting money to bankroll its ideologically driven academies and free schools which are an untried, untested and an unnecessarily costly experiment with children’s futures.

“Better procurement of new buildings is fine providing it does not mean a flat-pack strategy for schooling which creates buildings that are uninspiring and unfit for learning in the 21st century.
“Investment in school buildings should ensure that schools in the greatest need are the first to receive government help.

“It is scandalous that the Secretary of State has abused his position to divert capital funding away from schools in need, in order to bankroll free schools and academies.
“Regrettably, the Coalition Government’s decision to cut 60% from schools’ capital funding risks a return to the past where crumbling buildings and porta-cabin schools were a commonplace feature of the country’s school estate.”
