NASUWT comments on the wolf review of vocational education

Commenting on the Wolf Review of vocational education published today, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“The publication of the Wolf Review is the moment of truth for this Coalition Government’s commitment to high quality education post-14.

“The Review’s recommendations will not deliver equity for all post-14 learners or secure parity of esteem between academic and vocational learning, but it will contribute to educational segregation.

“It would be deeply regrettable if the Coalition Government compounded the current problem of spiraling youth unemployment by denying young people the right to participate in work-related learning, including work experience, as proposed by the Review.

“The proposals on funding for 16-19 learning have the potential to create a market in education that will undermine the breadth of study opportunities available to young people.

“Many of the proposals are employer rather than young people driven. Serious attention needs to be given to the financial contribution that employers should be making to secure the workforce skills they need.

“The Coalition Government should reflect very carefully before it considers implementing these recommendations. “Unfortunately, the Review is riddled with the elitist strategies for education that this Coalition Government finds so attractive.”
