Unite condemns pension changes as a ‘license to steal’

The coalition government has launched a consultation today (8 December) on legal changes that could reduce pension payouts by billions of pounds for workers, by giving businesses more scope to use the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation when upgrading benefits, rather than the Retail Prices Index (RPI), which tends to be higher.

Condemning the proposed changes, Unite general secretary- elect, Len McCluskey said:

“The government is offering companies a license to steal money from the pensions of workers who have already earned it and saved it for retirement. The CPI is not a better guide of inflation, it’s a lower one which the government has opportunistically seized upon with scant regard to its impact on vulnerable pensioners.

“These proposals have not gone unnoticed and will not go unchallenged.”
