Rethink: Comprehensive Spending Review

“The coalition government has promised that its imminent spending review will be ‘fair’. This is an ideal opportunity for it to put right the inequities that people with mental illness have faced for years, most obviously the lack of access to psychological treatments that are known to work. Taking steps to put this right would be a tangible sign of the coalition coming up with a progressive package.

“This should be an easy choice for government, because as well as being fair, it’s cost effective. Research has shown that £1,000 per person would be saved in direct service costs alone if people with schizophrenia were offered cognitive behavioural therapy. Early access to treatments like these mean the tab picked up later by the welfare, health and criminal justice systems is significantly less.

“The government pledged in its coalition agreement to extend provision of talking therapies. We hope that it now makes this happen for the 1.5 million people in the UK with severe mental illness, as this group has been consistently forgotten in previous drives to improve mental health provision.”
