CIOB brings construction into the classroom and into outer space

The new autumn term will see students from 50 schools across the UK developing key skills and showcasing their construction talent through a partnership programme between the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and The b-live Foundation.

Aimed at 11-12 year olds, students will need to hone their skills and get creative in real-life lessons as they try their hand at different projects like designing a sustainable building in outer space for 2050.

Paula Annels Head of Policy and External Relations at the CIOB said, “Being part of this employability programme enables us to reach the next generation before many of them start thinking about what career path to take. It gives us the chance to break down those stereotypes of the industry and show what a career in the built environment truly offers.

“The project, and lessons, we have devised meet the requirements of the national curriculum to improve general numeracy skills. So regardless of whether a student decides to pursue a challenging career in construction they will still be learning something really valuable in a thoroughly engaging way.”

Set in 2050 the students will face the challenge of an over populated planet and the need to create a sustainable headquarters for the future ‘Global Government’. Using recycled materials the project has to be designed in sections for assembly in Earth’s orbit. Energy for the project must be generated through renewable sources. As the students work through this challenge they will develop their functional maths and key personal learning and thinking skills that enhance employment prospects. They will also gain insight into the vital role of construction in a future, greener world.

The five school entries which are deemed the best by a panel of industry experts will make up a shortlist. Those shortlisted will have their design replicated in virtual 3D and exhibited at Ecobuild 2011, where members of the CIOB and the public will vote for the winner.

Tanja Kuveljic, Managing Director of The b-live Foundation said, “Inspiring children to realise their potential and develop their core skills is the key fundamental of The b-live Employability Programme.

All of the lessons give the students a chance to showcase their own personal strengths and develop new ones whilst giving them vital experience which they can use when looking for employment. We have created the programme to build children’s confidence about their ability and how they can use their skills for employment.”

The b-live Foundation created the Employability Programme as part of their ongoing commitment to help students gain work experience and; ultimately, employment. Already, their online careers site www.b-live.com helps 230,000 students in the UK with information such as career advice, work experience and CV skills. By bringing some of the UK’s leading employers into the Employability Programme, the projects are more engaging and realistic for students to work on.
