Welcome decision on academies and free schools may be ‘too little, too late’ says the NASUWT

Commenting on the decision at the Liberal Democrat Conference to support the motion on academies and free schools, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:

“I congratulate the Liberal Democrat Conference for finally listening to the implacable opposition to academies and free schools by parents, the public and the profession.

“The motion passed today is a severe blow to Michael Gove’s programme for academies and free schools.

“The Liberal Democrats now have a policy of outright opposition to academies and free schools.

“What happens next will determine whether the Liberal Democrats in Parliament have the influence they claim and are able to secure further concessions on academies and free schools.

“We now wait to see whether the Liberal Democrats are taken seriously by the Tories or whether they are merely puppets dancing to the Tories’ tune.

“The real disappointment is whether the decision taken by the Liberal Democrat Conference today is too little, too late given the passage of the Academies Act which threatens the very future of state education.”
