NASUWT: Nick Clegg snubs classroom teachers

On a tour of the exhibition stands at the Liberal Democrat Conference today, Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister, was pointedly steered away from the stand of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union.

Nick Clegg’s aides were directed to form a line in front of the NASUWT stand to ensure that the NASUWT General Secretary and National Officers, who are all serving teachers, were unable to engage with him on education issues.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“Classroom teachers will be bitterly disappointed that Nick Clegg deliberately avoided taking the opportunity to discuss the Coalition Government’s policy on education and hear the concerns of frontline staff.

“Given the devastating impact the Tory education policies, which are supported by the Liberal Democrats, will have on state education, the leader should have the confidence to face up to the profession and argue the case.”
