NASUWT: Public service and private sector comparisons grossly distort the truth

Commenting on media reports about the pay and pensions of public sector workers, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“This naked propaganda from the obsessive opponents of the public services should be given short shrift.

“These reports are designed to draw the public into a sterile argument of public versus private and to trap us all into the concept of equity of misery. The success of the national economy depends on the success of both sectors.

“Comparisons of this nature, between public services and the private sector, are deeply flawed”.

“The public sector has a larger number of people in professional roles. 53% of public service workers have Higher Education qualifications, as opposed to 28% in the private sector. Much of any identified pay gap can be accounted for by this factor.

“Attempting to identify private sector comparisons with public sector workers is impossible and grossly distorts the truth.”
