RHA welcomes freight-only route to the Continent

The Road Haulage Association welcomes today’s announcement from DFDS Seaways (formerly Norfolkline) that its ferry route from Rosyth, Scotland, to Zeebrugge, Belgium, is to undergo a major change of operation to provide an enhanced freight service.

The company is to increase sailings from three departures a week to four and will now operate two ships on the route, allowing freight capacity on the service to be dramatically improved.

However, the route will no longer operate as a combined passenger and freight service. According to DFDS Seaways, the current combined concept has been a constant loss-maker, and with no prospect of the position changing in the longer term, it has been left with no option but to withdraw the passenger service from mid-December 2010.

“We fully understand that those who have been using the passenger service on this route will be disappointed in these changes”, said RHA Director for Scotland, Phil Flanders. “However, the fact remains that the are delighted that DFDS has acknowledged the importance of the route for freight traffic.

“For Scottish hauliers in particular, this route represents a vital gateway to the rest of Europe. The increase in sailing, combined with the added capacity that a freight-only service will being will result in huge savings in time AND money.

“Above all, we are delighted that DFDS has acknowledged the vital role played by Scottish hauliers in the recovery of the economy” Phil Flanders concluded.
