‘Freedom from OFSTED not what it seems’ says the NASUWT

Commenting on the announcement that the Government is to ‘free’ outstanding schools from inspection, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“The NASUWT would like all schools to be freed from the current inspection system and a more supportive, developmental accountability regime put in place across the board.

“However, this announcement is another example of the Government’s so called ‘freedoms’ not being what they seem.

“The outstanding schools will still be subject to inspection. They will have ‘health checks’ and they can be inspected as a result of parental complaints.

“This announcement is nothing to do with ‘freeing’ schools. It is an unsubtle attempt to encourage more schools to sign up for academy status.

“It is no coincidence that this announcement was made at the same time as outstanding schools received the invitation from the Secretary of State to apply to become academies.

“Sensible governing bodies will immediately see through this transparent attempt to boost interest in a strategy to dismantle state education.”
