NASUWT comments on coalition government programme for schools

Commenting on the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition programme for Government in relation to schools, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“Nothing in the section on schools comes as any surprise as it was all previously published when the Conservative Education Manifesto was issued prior to the election.

“When the Conservatives published their invitation to join the Government of Britain, the Liberal Democrats said the Conservatives’ approach to school reform ‘is completely muddled’ and branded plans to reform the curriculum as ‘confused, ill thought out and naive’. Based on the document issued today it is now clear that the Liberal Democrats have now accepted the ‘Invitation to join the Conservative Government of Britain’ unconditionally.

“All of the sections in the Coalition Document published today on pensions, schools and public services are completely lacking in detail. There is no costing and no impact assessment of the programmes set out.

“The section on schools continues to ignore the views of the public which were clearly stated in polls conducted by Ipsos MORI in the run up to the election. So much for empowering communities and evidence based policy making we have been promised by the Conservatives.

“The NASUWT will be seeking the earliest opportunity to engage in dialogue with the Government on these critical issues for teachers, school leaders and schools.”
