RSPCA rescues swans stuck in ice

The RSPCA were called to a frozen lake in Wallasey, Merseyside yesterday morning to find several swans trapped in the ice.

AWO John Littlewood spotted diggers working on a nearby development and asked if they could help to break the thick ice up. Unfortunately one swan had died before they arrived, but all others were rescued and set free.

The RSPCA has received around 100 calls since Wednesday reporting ducks and swans stuck in ice on ponds and lakes, most birds managed to set themselves free, we have rescued others.

Due to the adverse weather conditions, the Society can only respond to emergency calls, but staff on the ground are trying their hardest to do what they can. In emergencies you can contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999. Advice on taking care of wildlife in the winter can be found at www.rspca.org.uk/wildlife
