National Energy Action supports MP’s attempt to give consumers more information on cheaper tariffs

National Energy Action (NEA) has welcomed a Ten Minute Rule Bill, due to be introduced in Parliament today (Monday), that would require energy companies to publish details of cheaper tariffs on customer bills.

John Baron, MP for Billericay and District, wants to see electricity and gas bills to include a section that will set out how much energy a customer uses, whether any cheaper rates are available and whether the customer is eligible for these lower tariffs which are offered by many gas and electricity companies.

Electricity and gas industries regulator Ofgem recently announced potential remedies to the issues identified in its probe into the energy market and this Bill would ensure that the transparency required on energy tariffs is enshrined in law and mandated by Parliament.

National Energy Action director of communications Maria Wardrobe said: “It is important that vulnerable customers are aware of the options for cheaper rates they might be entitled to, especially social tariffs. If consumers can find ways to pay less we can reduce the increasing problem of fuel poverty which the Government has a legal obligation to end by 2016. This Bill has widespread support and I hope it receives the support in the House it deserves.”
