MRSA Action UK welcome germ warfare in the Dragon’s Den

MRSA Action UK are pleased that the team on the BBC TV’s Dragons Den have given the opportunity to Paul Ward to tell them about his innovative product for killing MRSA and C.diff. As a Charity that represents people who have been affected by healthcare infections we know how important hygiene and cleanliness is in the fight against bacteria. We have worked alongside Paul and his team because we know that new technologies have an important role to play in combating bacteria that are constantly evolving.

Investment must be put into infection prevention and control and we know from experience that we need entrepreneurs like Paul to help in our fight against the superbugs.

Now that all patients undergoing elective surgery are being screened for MRSA, good hygiene and washing laundry safely is an issue that is being raised more frequently with MRSA Action UK. People want assurance that they are able to carry out decolonisation effectively prior to their surgery, using products like HALO combined with good hygiene, and the topical treatments for MRSA can help give that assurance. Relatives are increasingly being asked to take patients laundry home from hospital; we would advise that any heavily soiled items should be dealt with by the hospital staff, any other laundry should be taken home in a sealed bag. We would advise washing the laundry at the hottest temperature if a patient has had MRSA or C.diff, but this can be costly, so having an alternative way of washing the laundry at a lower temperature is a great breakthrough in the battle of the superbugs.

Nurses and carers have told us they need a solution to the problem of having to wash their uniforms at home safely. Not every hospital has facilities for staff to change out of their uniforms or for them to be laundered on the hospital premises. There are no plans to make this compulsory, despite our campaigning. However finding an alternative more efficient way of laundering the uniforms at a lower temperature safely is welcome news to us and those working in the healthcare environment.

Innovation and dedication to infection prevention and control are an important step to helping us reduce the burden of bacteria in our healthcare facilities. We know just how important these developments are.

MRSA Action UK will continue to work with Paul Ward and his team along with many other entrepreneurs who know how important it is to reduce the burden of bacteria in our healthcare environments. We are proud to have this association with this group of people.
