CIOB: Stars of the CIOB’s ‘International Innovation and Research Awards’ announced
Andrew Hart from the University of Northumbria has won this year’s Undergraduate Dissertation Award at the CIOB’s International Innovation and Research Awards 2008/09.
His dissertation ‘A paired comparison test between plain and finned concrete slabs using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and partial OPC replacement Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) with regard to heat absorption and release’, was of such high quality that one of the judges commented it was close to being a PhD thesis.
The new award for 2008/09, the Innovation Research Paper was won by Professor Stuart Green on behalf of ‘The Big Ideas.’ This was a three year EPSRC funded research project which sought to bring a fresh perspective to competitiveness in the UK construction industry. The project was in collaboration between the University of Loughborough, the University of Reading and the University of Salford.
Professor Albert Chan from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University won the Innovation Achievers Award for ‘Development of a Rapid Demountable Platform (RDP) for undertaking building repair and maintenance works at height in Hong Kong.’
Steve Coombs of the Welsh School of Architecture won the Architecture and Surveying Innovation Award for ‘Sustainable Sitka spruce housing system: Ty Unnos – ‘A house in one night’. This entry could make a real contribution to sustainable domestic housing.
The Innovation Technology and Development prize sponsored by PERA worth ?55,000 of business consultancy went to Neville Hutchinson from Shellform Limited for his ‘Report of a proposed permanent, concealed Flood Defence Barrier, for the protection of utilities, communication centres and other vital structures.’ This is an innovative flood barrier system which has enormous potential throughout Europe given the already evident effects of climate change.
Alan Crane a CIOB Ambassador and Chair of the CIOB International Innovation and Research Judging Panel commented; “In any economic circumstances, innovation is the life blood of an industry going forward and even more so in the current global environment. Throughout its 175 years history, the Chartered Institute of Building has been pushing the innovation imperative and is proud to still be the only professional body specifically recognising and awarding research and innovation from both academia and industry.”
The awards will take place in the evening of the 14th May and the guest speaker will be Sir Frank Lampl FCIOB, Honorary Life President of Bovis LendLease. Sir Frank is the recipient of the first Golden Presidential Medal of the Chartered Institute of Building.
