CIOB celebrates 20 years in China with further growth in membership

In the 30th year since Deng Xiaoping declared an open door policy in China, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has seen a 33 percent increase in its membership throughout mainland China.

Bryan He, the CIOB Regional Manager for China said; “Our goal is to expand our membership here by 15 to 20 percent annually, but still ensuring the high standard in our members’ professionalism.

“Our business currently operates out of three offices in Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai, and we plan to set up another office in Guangzhou to cover our work in southern China. Since our early engagement with China, we have set up cooperation programs with the country’s Ministry of Construction, now known as Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, as well as major building enterprises and prestigious universities.

“To enhance our influence in China, CIOB members will focus on fundamental research on key issues within the construction industry to improve China’s construction standards, where construction health and safety problems remain a key concern”, added He.

The CIOB is currently celebrating its 175th Anniversary and its 20th year of working within China. Of its 40,000 members working worldwide 1,500 are now from the Chinese mainland.
